Watch: 49ers introduce retro alternate uniforms

The 49ers are kicking it old school.

The team on Wednesday unveiled its new alternate uniforms, which are inspired by the 1994 Super Bowl season and reintroduce the franchise’s retro look.

In two years for Super Bowl 54, the NFL will return to one of its favorite Super Bowl locations. The Miami area already has hosted 10 Super Bowls, and its 11th will break a tie with New Orleans for the most in the country.

Now called Hard Rock Stadium, the venue that the NFL’s Miami Dolphins call home originally was named Joe Robbie Stadium when it opened in 1987. It has been renamed seven times since and has hosted five Super Bowls, with the old Miami Orange Bowl having hosted South Florida’s other five Super Bowls.

Two days in the NFL was enough for the former LSU offensive tackle, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The Texans placed the undrafted rookie on the reserve/retired list.

A four-star recruit out of Ruston, La., and two-year starter at LSU, Malone (6-4, 303 pounds) missed the last six games of 2017 because of a knee injury.

He was able to participate in the combine but said via social media Monday that the knee hadn’t completely recovered and it was “best to step away” from football. “With that being said, I will further my career in Law Enforcement,” he added on Twitter.

The Golden Knights are Canada’s team because of Marc-Andre Fleury, who is a proud Canadian, unlike Hellebuyck, who is an American, and therefore inferior. Fleury has a chance to potentially make the Hockey Hall of Fame, which is indeed located in Canada, because of course it is.

“But I’d rather be doing that than have broken the rules and had an issue that we were in an unlawful position by having some information. So there’s no doubt it’s a tough spot to be, but I’ll take the tough spot by following the rules versus not following the rules and being in an unlawful position.”ravens_151

Jerrell Freeman announces retirement

Veteran linebacker Jerrell Freeman announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday.

“I will be retiring from the NFL today,” Freeman said on social media. “My health and my family are my top priorities. . . . Thank you Bears, Colts, Roughriders, and yes, even the Titans (where I only had a cup of coffee, haha). You will always be like family. It’s been a long and rewarding journey.”

The Bears released Freeman in February.

Here’s something that definitely needs to happen. You need to subscribe to the podcast, and you need to rate it and review it. This late-afternoon tour of the NFL will only become what it can become if the members of the @PFTPMPosse become more involved in actively supporting the show.

For example, after USA Today reported in late March that the Competition Committee found fewer than 10 examples of 2017 plays that would have been penalties a year ago, the NFL told PFT that the information from USA Today was not correct.

“It’s a substantial change,” Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay said at the time. “Lowering their head, creating a different spine angle, and delivering a blow . . . we need to protect all players at all times and say that technique is not allowed. So if you lower your head to initiate contact and you initiate, it’s a foul. . . . It’s one of the most dangerous techniques there is, but yet we’ve allowed it to creep in and it’s now very prevalent. And we need to get it out. And we’re not going to get it out by saying, ‘We need to teach it better,’ we’re going to get it out by penalizing it.”

So it’s going to be applied a lot more extensively than only a handful of times per year, right? Apparently, wrong.

Via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, NFL executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent said Tuesday that, of 40,000 plays from recent years that have been examined by the league, only four hits would have triggered ejections under the new rules.broncos_032_61070dc1e64d4a64-180x180

Dolphins don’t pick up Stephone Anthony’s 2019 option

The decisions about 2019 contract options for 2015 first-round picks are in and the final result finds that 20 of the 32 picks had their options exercised this offseason.

Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, one of the 12 that didn’t is Dolphins linebacker Stephone Anthony. Anthony is now set for unrestricted free agency after the 2018 season unless he signs a new deal with Miami before hitting the open market.

Snell reported that Patricia and his friend, Greg Dietrich, were indicted on one count of aggravated sexual assault in relation to allegations stemming from an encounter during spring break in South Padre Island, Texas. Patricia was a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the time.

The accuser decided against testifying, which resulted in the case never going to trial.

Baalke is gone, but the 49ers haven’t stopped taking players in that position. They made former North Carolina State defensive end Kentavius Street the 128th overall pick of the draft despite a torn ACL that he suffered during a pre-draft workout for the Giants.

Street had surgery a few days ago and will almost surely spend his rookie season on injured reserve with the Niners.

Street started every game the last two seasons on a strong N.C. State defensive line — Street is the fourth player from the line drafted so far this year — and finished his college career with 19 tackles for losses and eight sacks.

Quite the start for new general manager Brian Gutekunst.

The Kansas City Chiefs were bound to ask Alex Smith to pass the quarterback torch to Patrick Mahomes in the near future. You don’t sacrifice two first-round picks for a guy and keep him on the sideline for long. broncos_065_bd10520178894a2b-180x180

Will McClay: Dez Bryant was inconsistent, couldn’t win one-on-one

Dez Bryant remains unsigned more than two weeks after the Cowboys released him. The receiver turned down an offer from the Ravens, and no other team publicly has expressed interest in him.

Cowboys scouting chief Will McClay essentially admitted Bryant’s play didn’t match the $12.5 million base and $16.5 million salary cap number Bryant’s contract called for in 2018. Bryant has not had a 1,000-yard season since 2014, and he has gone 23 games without a 100-yard game.

Between appearances and practice, NFL cheerleading could easily become a full-time job if teams added a morning practice, or a shift working in the team office before evening practice.

If this was a full-time job, or even just a better-paying part-time job, the women wouldn’t have to balance multiple jobs and drive themselves to exhaustion working a full day and then rushing to a full night of practice.

Ray has 13 sacks in 38 games since joining the Broncos and would be able to position himself well for free agency if he can improve on that production this year. Doing so could require beating out Chubb for playing time and that looks like a tall order given the fanfare that accompanies the rookie into the NFL.

We’d ride in the last bus, and we’d wait to grab our post-game meal until after the players got theirs.

We were viewed ashalf-letes by many of the other student-athletes because we weren’t a competitive team.

But we still got to travel comfortably to the games, we still received varsity letters, and we still had a coach who cared for us.

We were treated with respect and felt like we mattered.broncos_123_b362a4698d66a5eb-180x180

What Giants owner John Mara is saying about Barkley, Beckham

By missing the game against the Giants, Ingram will miss something of a homecoming.

One year ago at this time, there was widespread speculation the Eagles would trade for Ingram.

We know he’s not a polished blocker yet and perhaps he never will be, but if the Dolphins are willing to look past that, I think Gesicki can be an immediate weapon for Tannehill inside the red zone. After years of striking out at tight end with injury-prone underachievers like Julius Thomas and Jordan Cameron, I think Miami hit the nail on the head with Gesicki. I consider him a strong dynasty stash and a nice flyer late in drafts with potential for both volume and touchdowns. Which second-year running back do you see making the biggest leap and whose stock will drop the most?

The suspension leaves the Saints’ rushing attack short-handed and gives a larger role to Alvin Kamara, who won the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year award in 2017. Kamara started three games and served as an ideal complement to Ingram, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Alabama.

The duo became the first teammates to reach 1,500 yards from scrimmage in the same season, a feat that helped drive the Saints to the NFC South crown.

The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune first reported Ingram’s suspension Tuesday.

Ingram will miss home games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, and road games at the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants.

Ingram is heading into the final year of his contract. He’s posted consecutive 1,000-yard rushing campaigns and scored a career-high 12 rushing touchdowns in 2017. But he could have his role as lead back usurped by Kamara by the time he returns in October and will almost certainly carry the stain of a suspension into the free agent market next year.sharks-028

Did the Buffalo Bills get better or worse so far during the 2018 offseason?

Did the Buffalo Bills get better or worse so far during the 2018 offseason? More The Buffalo Bills have undergone a major face-lift since their wild card playoff exit. Josh Allen is the new face of the team following a well-applauded draft that will alter the franchise’s future for the next decade or more. As is usually the case following the draft; in the spring, a young fan’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of winning football come autumn.

Todd Bowles blown away by rookie Nathan Shepherd’s journey to NFL More With the focus in the locker room following Friday afternoon’s rookie minicamp being defense, the conversation naturally shifted to defensive end Nathan Shepherd’s journey to the NFL. From being forced to drop out of school for monetary reasons, to working numerous jobs so he could get back to college, and eventually winding up at an obscure Division II school in Kansas, Shepherd’s journey to 1 Jets Drive is remarkable, to say the least. It says a lot about the man, Todd Bowles told reporters. He’s determined to succeed no matter what he does. He carries himself, he works that way and I can appreciate that. You always hear about the bad stories.

The Cleveland Browns might draft a quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Tyrod Taylor will be the 29th diffferent starting quarterback for the Browns since 1999, but the franchise can get a long-term solution in the draft. Perhaps that will answer the riddle that has plagued the team at the most-important position.

It’s been reduced to the names and an infamous jersey, but there’s another layer to that. There were several opportunities where the Browns could have done something that might have fixed their quarterback problem. Hindsight is always 20/20, but when looking at scenarios it’s impossible not to wonder how things might be different in Cleveland had even one of these situations unfolded.

Roethlisberger has made it clear that Rudolph won’t see the field anytime soon, stating early this week his intention to play for three or five more years.

In a Friday morning interview with KDKA’s Cook and Poni in Pittsburgh, Roethlisberger expressed further displeasure, questioning the allocation of resources toward another potential quarterback of the future.tigers_057-115x115
